Why European Affairs at IDSL?​

In 2004 both a new European Parliament and a new European Commission took office. For the first time, the ten new Member States became part of the European Union (EU) institutional framework and new issues appeared at the forefront of the European Agenda.
The double rejection of the Constitution and the difficulties faced in adopting the 2007-2013 financial perspectives, project the image of an existing gap between the EU and the civil society as well as a lack of support from Member States. Nonetheless, over the last few years the EU has gained new competencies and its role has expanded to several domains, including many traditionally under sole Member State responsibility. Education is one of the domains where the role of the EU is increasing with regards to both coordination and inputs.
In this context, new opportunities stand out and IDSL is eager to play a greater and more influential role in the EU arena. The reason for this is that the EU is more and more involved in initiatives and opportunities of interest to IDSL both in terms of policies and of funding.
Management education and development has gained a great momentum in the EU, thanks to the launch of the Bologna process and the goals set by the Lisbon Agenda. In this context, IDSL is determined to capture the opportunity to promote its role as the European reference for management education.
While IDSL is a truly global organisation, it has a strong European dimension, which led to the decision in 2004 to establish an EU Affairs Unit within the IDSL Development Department. The new EU Affairs Unit aims at strengthening its efficiency and influence to the best interest of IDSL and its members.
The current IDSL EU-Affairs strategy is to take a more focused approach while building on past achievements. The core goal is to achieve a more effective lobbying towards the EU institutions and their main actors, with the purpose of raising the visibility and importance on the subject of Management Education.
